Our Own English High School – Sharjah Girls bags the Generation Global Bronze Award for making an active contribution to the local and global community
Our Own English High School, Sharjah Girls, a GEMS Education school, won the Generation Global Bronze Award for equipping the next generation to embrace an open-minded approach to others, to diversity and to difference. The award was instituted by the Tony Blair Faith Foundation which is registered with the Charity Commission of England and Wales.
Helping students flourish in an interconnected and complex world, Generation Global is designed for 12-17 year olds and is active in more than 20 countries. It seeks to embed children with skills and learning experiences to help them instil qualities towards being a global citizen.
The students at Our Own English High School, Sharjah Girls undertook several approaches highlighting their contribution towards instilling global citizenship. One of them was the creation of Junior Parliament by the students and for the. Students came up with draft resolutions prepared in the United Nations resolution model enabling them to get an overview of the stance adopted by various countries in the international arena.
In addition, students across all grades were involved in special assemblies, skits, art work, magazine and poster making, and debates to promote Peace Day Celebrations. In view of 2016 being declared as “The Year of Happiness” in the UAE, and with the spirit of the “Joy of Giving”, students between Grades 1 and 3 distributed food items such as pulses, cereals, rice, blankets etc. to private organisations that help the needy.
Engaging on social media platforms, students executed a “Protect your Mom” campaign that saw a wide range of student-led activities to spread awareness about protecting their moms.
Fiona Dwinger, from Generation Global, said: “We enjoyed reviewing the school’s application and all of the evidence that accompanied it. This is a really great achievement!”
Additionally, Grade 11 students participated in a video conference with the students of Izmail School, Ukraine on the topic: “Festivals”. The discussions primarily focused on various festivals, and how they promote world peace and harmony.
