Sara Al Zaabi – Pianist
What or who inspired you to become a pianist?
I started learning to play the piano when I was really young. My mum encouraged me to do extracurricular activities. I decided to do music because I had an amazing music teacher at primary school and was inspired to continue my lessons outside of school.
How does your teacher assist you in balancing your academics with your music?
She fits her schedule to what I need – makes sure she finds time for me to come and practice.
Give 2 reasons other Emirati students should learn to play an instrument.
1) It provides a source of comfort when you are feeling tense or pressured with schoolwork. 2) It gives you an added diverse background when applying for higher education studies.
Who is your role model? Why?
My mother is my role model. She puts my education first (above anything else). She understands that education must be a priority if you want to achieve anything.
You have excelled in playing the piano, what are some of your other areas of interest?
My interest outside of playing the piano is in science. I’ve been interested in science since I was younger. My aspiration is to become a doctor, so naturally I am attracted to science subjects. I’m interested in how the body works, as well as the different types of medicines that can be used to heal it. Even outside of my studies, I take the time to research the new discoveries that have been made in the study of medicines over the years.
Meera Al Dhaheri – Drummer
What inspired you to become a drummer?
I like to do beats. I used to watch a lot of programmes where the main characters played drums.
How does your teacher assist you in balancing your academics with your music?
We did drumming this term in class. I also have a drum kit at home, so I play a lot outside of school. I try to mainly practice during my break times, so it doesn’t interfere with my studies.
Give 3 reasons other Emirati students should learn to play an instrument.
1) Its fun to learn an instrument so you can play your favourite song. 2) some Emiratis have Ouds – it’s a tradition and so learning helps keep this tradition alive. 3) It can help you relax when you’re feeling stressed.
Who is your role model? Why?
I actually like Whitney Houston a lot; she had really good vocals.
You have excelled in playing the drums, what are some of your other areas of interest?
I like to play Football. I have five brothers so I play with them a lot. I am also the defender on the Al Bateen Football team.
