Early Years light up in blue
Dubai Investment Park’s leading American curriculum school, Nibras International School recently marked Autism Awareness Month with their Early Years students.
The school accepts autistic students in the Early Years and currently has four children with the disorder. To celebrate Autism Awareness month, the little ones from grade 1 to grade 3 came together in the central lawn, dressed in blue and formed a human chain in the shape of a smiley face to show support to their classmates. The students also watched a documentary to understand more about the disorder, challenges faced by Autistic children and adults and ways to help them.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), one in 160 children have an Autism Spectrum Disorder; Autism is prevalent in one in 42 boys and in the UAE it is one in 50 children.
Commenting on the activity, Habib Habib, the Co-Director of Nibras International School said, “The Early Year students are most aware about Autism as four of their classmates are faced with this challenge. On a day-to-day basis, we have observed that they support their friends and take utmost care of them.”
“Autism prevalence figures have been growing over the years and we encourage all parents to approach the right centres for correct information and support; and we are happy to welcome them to our Early Years classes,” he continued.
Autism is one of the most common conditions in the group of developmental disorders known as the Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs). Autism is characterised by impaired social interaction, problems with verbal and nonverbal communication, limited activities and interests and a tendency towards being isolated from others; ASD is known to affect at least one in every 68 births*.
