GEMS schools across the UAE celebrated International Day of Peace on 21st September 2016. Three schools, The Winchester School, The Westminister School and GEMS New Millennium School marked the day with a game of Quidditch.

The game, which is a modified version of what Harry Potter and his friends played in the books, promoted peace by reminding each student that “peace is in their hands”. This not only promoted coordination and unified thinking, but emphasized the importance of working together as a team to achieve one goal. The concept and entire programme has been created by GEMS Alumni from The Winchester School.

Commenting on the initiative, Fatima Martin, Principal of GEMS New Millennium School, said: “We constantly seek new and innovative approaches to promote student engagement in a way to bring about positive changes. Celebrating International Peace Day at our school has allowed our students to understand the importance of creating and maintaining peace amongst themselves, families and their surroundings.”

Sampoorna Dutta, Grade 8 student at GEMS New Millennium School shared her thoughts on peace by saying: “With everything that is going on around the world, I believe that International Peace Day will help create awareness needed to promote acceptance and happiness; and this starts with children. At school, we all need to have a level of peace within us to ensure peace around us.”
