October 10, 2016 - October 11, 2016
FUTURE ACCESSIBILITY & ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY
Future Accessibility & Assistive Technology summit 2016 will support the objective of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Chairman of the Executive Council, and the “My Community – A City for Everyone”initiative that was launched in November 2013, which aims to fully transform Dubai into a disabled-friendly city by 2020, through projects and initiatives aimed to maximize participation and inclusion of every citizens of the city.
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, in his capacity as Ruler of Dubai, issued Law No. (2) of 2014 to protect the rights of persons with disabilities in the Emirate of Dubai. This law aims to ensure that persons with disabilities enjoy all their rights, enhance their respect, preserve their dignity and protect them from all forms of discrimination or abuse, negligence or exploitation.
A Project titled “Accessible Environments for People with Disability based on Universal Design” was announced in April 2016. All new buildings, services and facilities — offices or residential towers, schools, stadiums, parks, and public spaces will have to be built in compliance with disability-friendly standards. Existing buildings and facilities will be “retrofitted” to make them disability-friendly as well.
Working groups have been formed within the Dubai government departments to develop the project which is already moving forward under a study being led by a specialist consultant. The budget for the study alone is AED 10 million. “The Dubai Code” will be a world class standard for accessibility in a modern urban environment and is seen as a milestone on the roadmap to achieving the Dubai 2020 vision.
Future Accessibility & Assistive Technology summit will address the following:
- Defining codes and regulations
- Consulting community stakeholders
- Investing in assistive technology
This summit will support the transition towards a more accessible urban environment by focusing on universal design concepts that integrate adaptive and assistive technologies that make services, buildings, transportation & activities in the city of Dubai more easily available to all. The event will support the introduction of “The Dubai Code” and to aid communication of its objectives and guidelines to the public and private sector and user groups.
