As one of Abu Dhabi Education Council’s (ADEC’s) top priorities to ensure students study in a safe and healthy school environment, more than 450 Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) officers from across all public and private schools in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, took part in an OSH awareness workshop.

The workshops that were delivered in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region consecutively highlighted the importance of adhering to basic rules and requirements of Occupational Safety and Health Abu Dhabi System Framework (OSHAD SF) in order to provide a safe and healthy learning environment for students and staff across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

“A safe, secure and healthy school environment that adheres to OSHAD SF requirements is crucial for us as an education council, and adds credibility to all the work we do. A student’s safety is amongst the most important priority for us in ADEC, which is exactly why schools have been thoroughly inspected on their first day back by a team of professional OSH inspectors,” explained Mr. Khaled Al Ansari, School Services Division Manager at ADEC.

ADEC’s OSH was established to implement Occupational Safety and Health Abu-Dhabi System Framework in ADEC’s operations and activities.

OSH Section goals are set to ensure the successful implementation of Education Sector OSHAD SF Requirements and the establishment principles, rules and objectives which is to monitor, inspect schools periodically and promote OSH culture and awareness to achieve and maintain safe and healthy learning environment for staff, students, educators and administrators.

ADEC’s OSH section organizes internationally accredited courses on a regular basis, targeting public and private schools throughout the academic year, aiming to raise OSH capabilities and competencies, promote awareness and update risk assessment record in order to reduce and minimize risks/hazards.

“OSH workshops aim to introduce ways in dealing with emergencies such as incidents, reporting systems, corrective actions and conducting regular follow-up of risks which may result from various activities conducted in swimming pools, gymnasiums and science laboratories,” explained Mr. Al Ansari, adding that ADEC’s OSH section makes sure that internationally accredited courses are delivered to the appropriate people concerned in all these areas. “Some of these courses include first aid, fire safety, risk assessment, and Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) targeting lab technicians, among many others,” he concluded.
